Sheila Walker Hassell

Sheila Walker Hassell of Rusk was born July 9, 1956, in Houston, Texas to Jakie Walker and Gale Underwood Walker. She passed away on Thursday, June 20, 2024 in Tyler at the age of 67.

She graduated from John Tyler High School in 1974. Her first job after graduation was at Dairy Queen in Jacksonville. After this she worked as a receptionist at Nan Travis Hospital in Jacksonville, clerical work at two law offices in Rusk, clerical work at Cherokee County Appraisal District, Cherokee County Auditor’s Office, and as church secretary and church office administrator at Grace Fellowship in Rusk. She also was a babysitter for various families in the community.

Sheila was preceded in death by her grandparents: Robert and Matilda Underwood and Jake and Audry Walker; her father, Jakie Walker; her mother, Gale Underwood Andrus; a step-father who she loved like a father, Herman Andrus; and a sister: Debra Walker.

Sheila is survived by her husband: E. Keith Hassell of Rusk; son: Jason Wood and wife Terri of Rusk; daughters: Jessica Johnson and husband Jon of Rusk, Hannah Hale and husband Jon of Rusk; grandchildren: Liam, Piper, Seth, Joshua, Cullen, Jacob, and KayLynn. Also by brothers: Jakie Walker of Tyler, Danny Shugart and wife Robbie of Bullard, and Duane Andrus and wife Dene of Sulphur Springs; sisters: Brenda Dominy and husband Earl of Rusk, Starla Latarro of Jacksonville, Vicki Lucas of Sulphur Springs, and Kim Cross of Haslet.

A celebration of Sheila’s life will be Sunday, June 30, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Rusk, 372 E. Fourth Street.

Sheila’s private family graveside service was previously held on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at the Meador Cemetery in Jacksonville.
