Alton John Hicks

Alton John Hicks, 94, of Alto, Texas, passed away peacefully in his home on August 13, 2026. He was born on November 26, 1931, to Archie and Ora Reece Hicks. A lifelong resident of Alto, Alton dedicated his life to his family and his community he held so dearly. 
Alton was married for 51 years to his beloved wife, Rosie Juanita Hicks. Together, they built a life centered around family, hard work, faith, and service. He was a devoted father and grandfather and took great pride in his family and the life they shared. A respected businessman and community leader, Alton owned and operated Hicks Post Company beginning in 1965.
His commitment to his community extended into public service, where he served as Cherokee County Constable from 1969–1972 and again from 1977–1984. He later served as a Cherokee County Commissioner from 1987–1998. Alton was also a proud 50+ year member of Terrell Lodge #83 in Alto, a Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Shriners, organizations in which he valued fellowship, service, and brotherhood. Beyond his work and public service, Alton was a lifelong cattle rancher and the owner of Hicks Cattle Company. He had a particular love for Gyr cattle and took great pride in raising and caring for them. Ranching was more than a livelihood to Alton—it was a way of life and a legacy he cherished. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of an international Brahman association. 
Alton will be remembered for his strong work ethic, dedication to his community, love of family, and passion for the land and cattle he devoted his life to. His 94 years were marked by service, perseverance, and a deep connection to the Alto and Cherokee County communities he called home. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue through his family, his work, and the traditions he loved so much. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Ora Reece Hicks; his beloved wife, Rosie Juanita Hicks; his infant son, Charles Alton Hicks; his daughter, Johnita Faye Hicks Jacobs; his son, Billy Wayne Hicks; and his siblings, Gladys Hicks Jones, Earl Hicks, and Leo Hicks. 
He is survived by his sons, Robert (Belissa) Hicks, Kenneth (Gay) Hicks, and Larry (Cynthia) Hicks and brother, Roy Hicks. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Sarina Jacobs, Julie Jacobs, Shanna Hicks, John Hicks, Josh Hicks, Jake (Destini) Hicks, Jorden (Trent) Fulton, Brian (Jami) Hicks, and Adam (Rachel) Hicks, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends for visitation on August 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Alto, with funeral services to follow at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Alto. Burial will be at Lynches Chapel Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Hicks, Jake Hicks, Adam Hicks, Case Hicks, Rylan Hicks, and Grady Hicks. Honorary pallbearers are Josh Hicks and Bobby Reese.
