Odis Marvin Echols peacefully passed away on May 29, 2026 in Rusk, Texas at 87 years old. Born in Rusk on June 24, 1938, Odis lived a life filled with laughter and love.
Odis was the son of Henry Marvin (Pap) and Nola Bea (Mamaw) Echols and grew up in a loving family alongside his siblings, Frances Mangiafico, Patricia Haddock, Charles Echols and Mina Harris. Odis was predeceased by his parents, sister Francis, and brother Charles.
Odis graduated from Rusk High School in 1956, and he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Stephen F. Austin in 1961. He then embarked on a 33-year career as a math teacher and coach, predominantly focusing on football. He had a passion for teaching and coaching, and he left a lasting impact on countless students and athletes.
Odis married Carol Echols in November 1958. Together, they built a family, welcoming two sons, Ronald Michael and John Mark. Odis reveled in the joy of his five grandchildren, as well as his four great-grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his later years.
Odis enjoyed his farm and raising cattle. He liked to fish and hunt, often returning from his adventures with stories that could light up a room. A man of many interests, Odis also took pride in breeding Boxers and had a knack for collecting a variety of items. Despite the challenges he faced, including the loss of his leg, Odis never lost his sense of humor. He was known for his quick wit and ability to find humor in any situation, often using his prosthetic leg to elicit laughter from friends and family.
Odis's life was a testament to resilience, joy, and love. He adored his great-grandbabies and was always ready with a joke to lighten the mood. His warmth and playful spirit were contagious, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
