Update: Visitation will be Jan. 10, 2026 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. Memorial service to follow at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home, 221 5th Street, Rusk, TX 75785
Geraldine (Gerry) Webb Struhall of Jacksonville, Texas exited Stage Left on December 3, 2025 at 90 years of age. She entered Stage Right on May 12, 1935 in Henderson, Texas to Abner & Affie Bradford Webb. Gerry received her early education in the Henderson and Rusk school districts, demonstrating a passion for learning that would continue throughout her life.
She went on to attend the University of Texas at Austin, where she became a proud member of Chi Omega sorority where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and English, later furthering her education by obtaining a Master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin University.
During her time at UT Austin, Gerry met James Francis Struhall of Austin. The two married and together welcomed five children: James Francis (Jamie) Struhall Jr., Larry Anthony Struhall, Suzanne Marie (Suzie) Struhall, Mary Kathryn (Katie) Struhall, and Sally Ann Struhall-Brown.
After her divorce, Gerry moved with her children back to Rusk in 1968. She began her teaching career at Slocum ISD, where she taught English. Later, she moved to Rusk and taught Drama and English, sharing her love for the arts with her students. The FTA (Future Teachers of America club) was run by Gerry; it was a student favorite. The kids looked forward to doing skits at the regional and national meetings. A trip to a big city with one of your favorite teachers and friends made so many lasting memories. Gerry concluded her career teaching at John Jay High School in San Antonio.
Gerry’s passion for theater was evident in her involvement with the Cherokee Civic Theater in Rusk. She dedicated countless hours to acting and directing productions, creating a vibrant community of performers and friends. Many of her friends’ children participated in theater productions, though her own children now wonder why they were not recruited—perhaps the theater served as Gerry’s cherished escape!
Beyond teaching and theater, Gerry enjoyed dancing, playing bridge, and relaxing with a cold beer on her screened porch. Friday nights were often spent listening to the Rusk Eagle band from her porch.
In 1986, Gerry relocated to San Antonio, embracing all that the city had to offer. In 1991, she suffered a massive stroke that ended her teaching career. Her youngest daughter, Sally, made the compassionate decision to change colleges and move in with her mother, caring for her during this challenging period. Together, they later moved to Dallas. Eventually, Gerry returned to Rusk and lived independently for several years before moving into Countryside Senior Living of Jacksonville.
Throughout her life, Gerry maintained her trademark sarcastic wit. Her greatest joy in her later years was playing bridge weekly with her friends, which brought her comfort, cocktails and companionship. Her two beloved cats provided love and comfort until the end.
Gerry was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Mary Kathryn (Kay) Webb Jordan; her son Jamie Struhall; her daughter Sally Struhall-Brown; and her daughter-in-law Debbie Jinkins-Struhall. She is survived by her children; her grandsons Jamie Struhall III (with Kattie) and Terry Struhall (with Emily); her grandchildren Francis, Olivia, Madison; and her son-in-law Mike Brown.
A memorial service will be held at Wallace Thompson Funeral Home, with the date to be determined. We thank Countryside Senior Living and Heart to Heart Hospice for the incredible Love and care she received. In Lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Cherokee Civic Theater at 157 W. 5th St, Rusk, TX 75785.
