LETTER: Making Rusk the best it can be

July 26, 2025

To the citizens of Rusk,
I just want to say thank you for the phone calls and the conversations when we happen to meet.
Your ideas for improving our beautiful little town and yes, the complaints, if acted upon, will make it a better place for us all.
Good things are happening in Rusk. New homes are being built in the Twisted Oaks area and Ellis Street. The Texas State Railroad Train is running out of Rusk again on two Thursdays of each month. You can go online to the website to find the exact dates. Please help spread the news. There is a nonprofit group negotiating with the city to bring a new tourist attraction to town. The Resilient Communities Plan, with helpful information for the city, will soon be ready and available to city leaders.
Complaints I receive most often are about street light outage, the condition of some streets in residential areas, the old Junior High building located at Third and Henderson streets – the dangerous and unsightly condition of the (US) Highways 84 and 69 entrances into the city and many stray animals appearing in neighborhoods. The City Manager and Mayor have been made aware of these problems.
Neil Holcomb and his crew, along with our new code inspector, are working hard to clean up Highway 84 and 69 entrances into the city. Street paving is set to begin this month, which will hopefully take care of the street problems.
City Council meetings are held 5:30 p.m., second Thursday evening of each month. Continue to call me and stop me to discuss what you are thinking (903-721-3111). It’s going to take us all working together to make Rusk the best it can be. Please be patient and remember great things are going to happen in Rusk.

Maxine Session,
Councilwoman, District 2,
City of Rusk
