Polling places listed for May 3 elections

Several entities in Cherokee County will offer polling from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 3, for the following ISD, municipal and bond elections:

ALTO. Candidates are vying for seats on both the local city council and school board, with all voting held at The River Church, 595 S. Marcus St.

Individuals running for two spots on Alto City Council include Luke Johnson and Nathaniel Buckingham, incumbents, who are challenged by Debra Grimes. In the race for two seats on the AISD school board, incumbents Jay Jones and Charley Reid are challenged by Diane Sevilla-Braddock and Tony Sevilla.

TROUP. Local voters can cast ballots at Cameron-J. Jarvis Troup Municipal Library, 102 S. Georgia St., in this year’s contested Troup City Council races. The Place 4 race features Nolan Jeske – appointed last year to a different position on the council – and Kaston Kincade, the Place 5 seat has drawn candidates Amy Murawski and Susan Adams. 

JACKSONVILLE. A special election has been called for creation of a Municipal Development District within the city’s mile-deep extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ), with a separate proposal to create a half-cent sales tax that will be imposed in the ETJ to help support projects within that district. Cast ballots at the Jacksonville Public Library, 524 E Commerce St.

RUSK. The local ISD has trustee and bond elections scheduled this year. Contested school board races include the Seat 4 race, with incumbent Jake Ocker and challenger Jami Hicks vying for the position, and Seat 5, which has drawn Chris Work and incumbent Oliver Sturns.

RISD bond election proposals include Proposition A, which focuses on construction of a new $45,240,000 elementary school. Proposition B seeks upgrades to the RHS Athletic Complex with a new 16,000-square-foot facility, update of the current facility and expansion/renovation of Eagle Stadium. This project is earmarked at $11,925,968.
