Jan 10 school closings due to weather

by Staff reports

Two area school districts have announced Friday closings in advance of overnight winter weather conditions that could impact Jan. 10 travel conditions.
“This decision considers the many rural roads involved in our bus routes and the large number of staff members commuting from the north,” said a notice issues late Thursday afternoon by Jacksonville ISD officials that was “based on an abundance of caution due to the weather’s unpredictability … the safety of our students, staff, and community remains our top priority.”
Troup ISD officials also announce cancellation of Friday classes “due to the anticipated overnight forecast which includes snow and freezing temperatures … we recognize the challenges presented by hazardous road conditions and want our students and staff to be safe.”
Jan. 9 sporting events for these and other districts have been canceled or rescheduled, with updates to be released later for Friday activities, officials said.
Classes at these two campuses will resume as normal on Monday, Jan. 13.
In the southern end of Cherokee County, Wells students can expect to attend Friday classes as normal, while districts in Rusk, New Summerfield and Alto – which operate on four-day school week – do not have Friday classes scheduled.
