Pope appoints new Bishop for East Texas

TYLER – Bishop Gregory Kelly, Auxiliary Bishop of Dallas, has been appointed as the newest bishop of the Diocese of Tyler, a 33-county area covering northeast Texas that is home to 120,000 Catholics.
The announcement was made by the Diocese of Tyler Dec. 20, 2024, in a release stating, "This morning, Pope Francis announced the appointment of Bishop Gregory Kelly, Auxiliary Bishop of Dallas, as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Tyler."
Kelly succeeds Bishop Joseph Strickland, who was removed from the Tyler see in November 2023. Bishop Joe Vasquez of the Diocese of Austin has served as apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Tyler in the interim.
Bishop Kelly will be introduced during a 10 a.m. press conference held in the St. Paul Meeting Room at the Tyler chancery, 1015 ESE Loop 323 in Tyler.
