Here is your chance to help victims of hurricanes

Hurricane Helene prior to making land strike. Hurricane Helene prior to making land strike.

It has been 3 weeks since Hurricane Helene tore a path of destruction from Florida to the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee; organizations from across the south were doing everything they could to help the survivors. And then Hurricane Milton slammed into Florida spawning tornadoes and more destruction.
When the infrastructure - homes, roads, water systems, electricity, stores, jobs – is washed away, the recovery is going to take a long time. But right now, people need the basics and there is an effort right here to gather supplies to be taken next Thursday, Oct 17 to the hardest hit areas. Julio Torres is going to drive his pickup truck with a trailer loaded with donations. Some of the most needed items are toilet paper, baby wipes, diapers, baby formula, granola bars, trail mix and other snacks that are easily portable and don’t require refrigeration.
Donations may be dropped off at Prodigal Home, 32143 US Hwy 69, Rusk until Thursday morning, Oct. 17. If you are unable to take them to that location they may be brought to the Cherokeean Herald office, 595 N. Main Street, Rusk, beginning Wednesday morning until Thursday morning.
