Sharon Lybrand Dement, known affectionately as Sherrie, passed away peacefully at home on September 9, 2024, at the age of 80, with her devoted husband of 64 years by her side.
Born on September 26, 1943, in Lakeview, Oregon to Barbara Rentle and John Lybrand. She was the eldest of 4 girls. Raised in Bly, Oregon, Sherrie excelled academically and graduated as valedictorian of Bly High School. She went on to marry and have three children, eventually moving to Texas to further her education. Sherrie attended Lon Morris College for two years before transferring to Stephen F. Austin University (SFA), where she earned her bachelor’s degree and later returned for her master’s degree, graduating with honors.
Sherrie had a distinguished career at Jacksonville Independent School District while continuing her studies, and she was recognized in Who's Who in America. She was an active member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and received honors from Alpha Lambda Delta Scholastic Tassels.
Beyond her academic and professional achievements, Sherrie had a passion for restoring antiques and enjoyed attending estate sales. She cherished picnics with family and friends and was a devoted member of the Church of Christ.
Sherrie is survived by her loving husband, Jackie Don Dement; her grandchildren: Aaron Paul Dement, Ben Amazeen, Luke Dement and wife Kenzie, Addie Powell, Lance Dement and wife Tori, Kailey Dement, Keegan Dement and wife Meredith; her sisters: Lorna Harris, Leeann Chase, and Bonnie Lee; and nine great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews whom she deeply loved.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Rentle; stepfather, V.L. Rentle; father, John Lybrand; in-laws Carl and Cora Dement; and her children: Kennie Dement, Jerrie Dement, and Liddie Amazeen.
Sherrie’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her, and her legacy of love and dedication will live on through her family and the many lives she touched.
A visitation service will be held at Autry Funeral Home on Friday, September 13th, where friends and family are invited to celebrate Sherrie’s life and legacy from 6 to 8 p.m. Graveside service will be held Saturday, September 14th at 2:00 p.m. at Lone Dove Cemetery with Bro. Robin Parsons officiating.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
