JPD identifies July 9 shooting suspect

Jacksonville police are seeking help from the community in locating Damien Charles Smith, who is wanted in connection with the July 9, 2024, shooting in the 700 block of Elm Street.

“During the early morning disturbance, Justin Torres, 31 years of age, sustained a single gunshot wound,” according to a Jacksonville Police Department release issued Friday morning. “Torres was transported to a local hospital and was later released following treatment.”

Warrants have been issued for Smith, 28, of Jacksonville, who is considered to be armed and dangerous. These warrants include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, with a bond set in the amount of $600,000, police said.

Anyone with information regarding Smith and his whereabouts, or any information regarding this investigation, should call 911 or contact the Criminal Investigations Division at (903) 586-2546. Cherokee County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of Damian Smith.
