JACKSONVILLE

Marine Corps League Detachment #1381 hosts an 11 a.m. Memorial Day service, at Hazel Tilton Park, 174 E. Larissa St. near downtown Jacksonville.

Senator Robert Nichols and Jacksonville Mayor Randy Gorham are guest speakers for the event.

A second event scheduled Monday is the Memorial Day grand opening ceremony at Chelsea’s Chariot and 2nd Chance Ranch and Rescue, 354 County Road 1614 in Jacksonville.

Home of the Rescue Readers. The rescue program pairs up rescue dogs with children to help the youth brush up on oral reading skills. Military veterans work with the dogs to train them for the program. The rescue is operated by a local veteran whose wife initially developed the reading program for her grade school students.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony kicks off the family friendly event with food trucks, vendors, live music, walking trails, and a chance to meet the rescue dogs. The event lasts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

RUSK

An annual Cherokee County Memorial Day service held 11 a.m. Monday, on the Courthouse Square in downtown Rusk, with flyovers planned during that time – as weather permits – at the downtown location as well as over Cedar Hill and Memorial cemeteries, which will be decorated with US flags. This is a traditional observance of honor and remembrance with patriotic music and musket gun salute.

BUSINESS CLOSINGS

A number of offices are closed Monday in observance of the May 27 national holiday. They include the US Postal Services, banks/financial institutions, ETCOG and Cherokee County offices. Municipal offices posting Memorial Day closures include those in Alto, Bullard, Cuney, Jacksonville, Reklaw, Rusk, New Summerfield, Troup and Wells.
