John L Newell

John L. Newell, 79, of Alto, passed away on January 28, 2023, at home. A funeral for John will be held Thursday, February 2, 2023 at 12:00 PM in the chapel at Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk with Brother Jack White officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service, beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial to follow the service at Arnold Cemetery.

John was born in Bloomfield, New Jersey to John Leo and Eleanor Dorothy (Meyer) Newell. John served in the US Army from 1967 until 1975. He did two tours in Vietnam, receiving a purple heart, several bronze and silver stars, and various other awards. He attained the rank of Captain.

He is preceded in death by his mother Eleanor Newell.

Survivors include his wife; Toni A. Newell; daughters, Michele Bear and Kristina Dickson; brother, Jerry Newell; sister Janice Nordquist; grandsons, Alex Bear, Mason Dickson, and Brice Dickson; granddaughter, Devan Dickson; several nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
