RUSK – Local cookbook author Lurlene Bowden has reissued her cast-iron cookbook collection that focuses on Black heritage recipes “that were transmitted verbally” from generation to generation, she said.

The four-book collection spans a period from 1861 to the 1960s, and incorporates a richness of history told through the cooking of area women.

Titles include “From the Soul into the Cast-Iron Skillet,” “From the Soul into the Cast-Iron Skillet, Too,” “Mammy’s Creole Cajun Cast-Iron Cooking,” and “Creole Calas Criers,” with the reissued tomes published under her publishing company Spirit, Soul and Shadow.

The books currently are in the process of being published, and are expected to be available later this month, at a cost of $25 each, with no tax or shipping applied, Bowden said.

The books are sold through Amazon or can be purchased through Bowden’s Facebook page, “Lurlene Bowden.”
