Registration open for Kilgore College Fire Academy

KILGORE – Interested in becoming a firefighter? Registration is open through Jan. 5, 2021, for Kilgore College Fire Academy No. 112.

The 47-hour Basic Structural Firefighter program, which begins Jan. 19, is a 12-week academy that runs through April 20. Classes are scheduled Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a possibility of evening and/or weekend classes, officials said.

The program, which began in 1989, is open to students with a valid high school diploma, official high school transcript or GED scores with their applications.

“The program is physically demanding as well as academically challenging and the Texas Commission on Fire Protection strongly recommends all students be able to read and comprehend with at least a 10th grade reading level,” according to officials.

Admission to the KC Fire Academy is based upon a highly competitive process with preference given to an applicant’s level of education, experience and their affiliation with a career, volunteer department or rescue unit.

Tuition is $1,200 for in-state students and $1,750 for out-of-state students.
