CHEROKEE COUNTY – City-wide fall clean-up efforts are slated in early October for two local cities.

In Rusk, a clean-up day will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the City Warehouse on U.S. Highway 69 South, announced Rusk city officials.

According to Public Works Director Neil Holcomb, the event is restricted to residents who live within city limits or who receive water service if they live outside city limits.

“Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has strict regulations and guidelines that we are required to follow in order to ensure the safety of our staff and the surrounding community,” he noted. “All items must be manageable by two people when loading the container.”

Accepted items for the Rusk event include: Brush/yard waste; bulky items; household items; furniture; outdoor grills; dishwashwers; appliances that do not use Freon; paper or cardboard items; lawn mowers; construction debris; mattress sets wood/metal items; and water heaters

Banned items include: Liquids of any kind; whole tires (must be split or quartered); oil/oil filters; refrigerators/AC units/appliances containing CFCs (Freon); lead acid batteries; hazardous waste; chemicals/pesticides; paint/paint buckets (the exception is if paint is completely dried and free of liquid); medical waste of any kind; and dead animals

In Wells, fall clean-up is a two-day event, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, through 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the depot located behind Wells City Hall, 293 Rusk Ave. Bulk items are accepted; however, certain items – liquids of any type, oil filters, tires, refrigerators/air conditioners or barrels of anything containing CFCs – are banned.
