Hill: Permits needed for certain storm repairs in Rusk; some fees waived through March 10

Rusk City Manager Amanda Hill reminded local residents dealing with storm damage repair that some of those repairs require permits.

“As we begin the process of making repairs after the storm, we would like to remind residents that certain things require a permit. In addition, any damages turned into insurance companies or to FEMA will have to be permitted and inspected. Until March 10, 2021, we will be waiving plumbing and electrical permit fees,” she said

Residents can obtain a permit one of two ways: By going to City Hall – located at 205 S. Main St. – or online at https://rusktxpermit.portal.iworq.net/portal.../rusktxpermit

According to city officials, the following guidelines can help residents determine whether a permit is needed for repairs.

• A permit is not required for the replacement of Sheetrock, flooring, the stopping of water leaks, or the replacement of any electrical fixtures.

• A plumbing permit will be required if the water piping or section thereof is damaged and needs to be cut out and replaced.

• An electrical permit will be required if any new electrical wiring is required to be installed. If your contractor is unable to obtain a permit due to after hour work, they are required to obtain a permit within 48 hours of making the repair. The City will make every attempt to complete all requested inspections the same day.

• State licensing laws require any individual who cuts into a plumbing or electrical system to make repairs be licensed for the appropriate trade.

• The City of Rusk requires anyone pulling a permit for plumbing or electrical work that is not on their homestead property to be licensed by the state.

All prohibited plumbing and electrical allegations or suspected illegal plumbing and electrical work will be investigated and may lead to expensive fines, penalties and criminal charges, Hill noted.
