The Editor – Cast a ballot

by Jo Anne Embleton news@thecherokeean.com

One hundred years ago this year, the 19th Amendment was adopted, and women were granted the right to vote.

In 1965, the Voting Rights Act directed the nation's Attorney General to enforce the right to vote for Blacks.

In upcoming days, Cherokee County residents will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the Nov. 3 general election, with the option of voting on election day, or taking advantage of early voting this week. Either way, please consider utilizing your right to vote.

Today through Friday is the final week of early voting, with local hours set from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday; 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday; and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Only during the early voting period, can one cast a ballot at any of the three polling places within Cherokee County: At the Cherokee County Election Department, 138 W. 5th St. in Rusk; The River Church at 595 Marcus St. in Alto; or at the Norman Activity Center, 526 E. Commerce St. in Jacksonville.

Meanwhile, in Wednesday's Cherokeean Herald, a list of Nov. 3 polling places will be published for your convenience. Election Day coverage will appear in our Nov. 10 edition, as results will be in long after the Cherokeean’s press deadline.
