BBB to hold “Secure Your ID” Day shredding event in Tyler

TYLER – Better Business Bureau serving Central East Texas (BBB) in partnership with Kelly Community Federal Credit Union and Ark-La-Tex Shredding will hold their annual “Secure Your ID” day 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 18, at the BBB offices, 3600 Old Bullard Road, Tyler. The event was supposed to be held in April, but was postponed due to COVID-19 regulations/recommendations.

The services are provided FREE and attendees are encouraged to bring paper documents that contain personal and/or financial information to be destroyed as well as electronics such as old computers, hard drives and cell phones.

In 2019, BBB hosted four “Secure Your ID” events throughout East Texas, resulting in more than 25,000 pounds of documents destroyed and an additional 1,500 pounds of electronics.

"Through BBB events in 2019, we helped the East Texas community shred more than 12.5 tons of documents,” Coleman Swierc, Communications Manager for BBB serving Central East Texas said. "That saved approximately 212 trees, 87,500 gallons of water, and over 51,000 kWh of energy, not to mention the number of identities which were kept safer.”

Shredder trucks and volunteers will be on hand to assist participants and hand out information on identity theft protection. Consumers are encouraged to attend the event and take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of their sensitive paper documents. Volunteers will be using recommended Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). All attendees must remain in their vehicles during the event.

BBB Serving Central East Texas is part of an expansive network of BBBs across North America that collaborate to produce Secure Your ID Day events. The program is a BBB-branded identity theft, fraud prevention and educational initiative that features on-site document destruction and distribution of identity protection tips and resources to local communities.
