JEF offering grad bricks

Looking for the perfect graduation gift for JHS 2020 graduates? The Jacksonville Education Foundation will be taking orders for commemorative graduation bricks through Tuesday, March 31. Brick installment is planned to be before graduation! Pick up forms at Austin Bank-Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, JISD Central Office or visit www.jisdfoundation.org/pavers to order.

Join Relay for Life

Steak cooking

class offered

Are you new to the steak cooking competition scene? Hassell Cattle Co. and the Steak Cookoff Association is holding an SCA 101 steak cooking class for new competitors, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, March 7, at 4077 FM 23, Rusk. The class will be taught by World Food Championship Top 10 Steak Finalist Janet Baker. Students will need to bring their own grills and grates; charcoal and charcoal chimney and lighters; seasonings; and meat thermometer. Students will be cooking their own wagyu steak lunch and favorite beverages. Side dishes will be provided.

Crisis volunteer training available

The Crisis Center of Anderson and Cherokee Counties will hold volunteer training, 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 7, at the center, 700 E. Cherokee St., Jacksonville.

Due to limited space, participants need to reserve a spot by visiting the center’s Facebook page. Individuals with a desire to join the Crisis Response Team (CRT) in Cherokee County will be trained to provide on-site advocacy to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.

The CRT works together with law enforcement, local hospitals, the DA’s office, and other community partners to ensure the coordination of care for domestic violence and sexual assault survivors and the investigation of their cases.

Volunteers are needed to deliver efficient advocacy and crisis intervention at hospitals or local law enforcement offices. They will also provide resources to survivors through this collaborative effort.

The Jacksonville Public Library will hold a movie matinee, starting at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 9, at the library, 502 S. Jackson St., Jacksonville. Feature film is Disney’s Moana.

Crisis Center screening ‘The Bystander Moment’

Join the Crisis Center of Anderson and Cherokee Counties for a free screening and discussion of the film ‘The Bystander Moment: Transforming Rape Culture at its Roots,’ featuring anti-rape educator, writer and activist Jackson Katz. The event will be held 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, at the Crisis Center, 700 E. Cherokee St., Jacksonville. Light refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited. CCTRC meets

The Cherokee County Texas Republican Club will meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, at Hong Kong Buffet 1644 S. Jackson St., Jacksonville. The guest speakers will be Republican Party Primary runoff candidates and winners of the primary. Union Hill Cemetery will hold its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 14 at Pine Hill Church of God in Christ, 4353 CR 4505, Jacksonville. All are welcome.

Open house, car show scheduled

Rogue Offroad is holding its first ever open house and car show, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until the fun stops) Saturday, March 14, at the business, 1032 N. Jackson St., Jacksonville. The free event will feature car/truck/ATV-UTV/motorcycle show; music and entertainment by Boogie Butt Productions; bounce house; free food and drinks provided by Texas National Bank; and free beer, courtesy of GG Distributing and Miller Lite.

Craft fair scheduled

CCMGA holding spring conference

The Cherokee County Master Gardeners Association will be hosting its 2020 Spring Conference, 1-4 p.m., Saturday, March 14, at the First United Methodist Church, 1031 Loop 456, Jacksonville. Registration will be held from noon to 1 p.m.

Admission is $15 per person. Sessions featured include ‘Choosing Your Fruit Trees,’ ‘Companion Planting’ and more.
