New Summerfield creates campus police department

New Summerfield ISD officials announced the creation of the local school district police department July 31, 2025, with all required documentation submitted to the State of Texas. Trey Shewmake (center) was sworn in by Cherokee County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Judge Rodney Wallace (left) as the district’s inaugural police chief during Thursday’s ceremony. According to officials, New Summerfield Police Chief Fred Butler (shown holding the Bible upon which Shewmake made his oath) offered the district guidance during the process while local school board trustees ensured staff and students safety remains a top priority.
